Best for a cruelty free cheat day: Vegan Junkfood Bar, Amsterdam

I had The Vegan Junkfood Bar on my list of places I wanted to visit for ages and this weekend I finally had the time to go! I had been following them on social media for a while and the most amazing burgers kept popping up my timeline.

The restaurant is in Amsterdam, on Marie Heinekenplein which is a lively square near the Rijksmuseum with loads of other restaurants. You can’t miss this one though- the outside is painted bright pink and they got large blue picnic tables outside. With a large, graffiti style logo on the door, The Vegan Junkfood Bar, or #VJFB as they call it, is easy to spot. The interior is creative and fun, with loads of bright graffiti art on the walls, high chairs and bar style tables as well as neon signs and a large sofa on the side.

Upon arrival people were queueing for a table, which only made me more excited to eat here since it is so popular! We got a table outside on the picnic tables, next to the heaters while the first signs of spring sun greeted us. For the first time ever I found it so difficult to pick what I wanted to eat! I am used to eating in normal restaurants, which usually only offers about 3 vegetarian dishes (including one mushroom one-which I hate, so easy to choose a dish). The Vegan Junkfood Bar however is, as the name suggests, completely vegan so if you are vegetarian or vegan- you are spoilt for choice!

Of course it is a junkfood restaurant, so the menu offers different types of burgers, shoarma, ‘loaded’ fries with shoarma and other typical Dutch snacks (bitterballen). Also in terms of drinks they got cool options, from alcoholic cocktails to fresh juices, and coconuts.

While making a decision, we had the banana chips which were amazing. Nice and crispy and loads of flavor, accompanied with salsa to dip it in. For drinks I chose a matcha ice tea, which was nice and fresh, a good refreshing drink for on a sunny day!

After spending half an hour staring at the menu, I went for the ‘Daddy MC Chick’n’ which is a double plant-based Chik’n burger with cheddar, lettuce, tomato, red spring & fried onion mix, pickles, mayo sauce. My brother ordered the ‘Notorius Sumo’ which is a double plant-based beef burger with cheddar, fried onion rings, lettuce, tomato, red, spring & fried onion mix, pickles, jalapeños, VJFB sauce. My Mom went for the classic shoarma, a burger bun filled with plantbased shoarma.

It is obvious the images speak for themselves but I am going to say it anyway: these burgers were UNREAL! First of all my ‘chicken’ burger was so big I didn’t eat anything anymore for the rest of the day that is how filling it was! The ‘chicken’ burger itself was so tasty, well seasoned and the crispy crust was the ultimate finishing touch. Also the garnish on the burger (lettuce, tomato and pickles) were so fresh and the vegan cheese as well as the mayo were so tasty I could not even tell the difference to this and normal mayo and cheese. I did try vegan cheeses before and I did not like them, but this was just so tasty- I am getting hungry writing and thinking about it! I wanted to try my brother’s plantbased beef burger as well, however he ate it all before I blinked- that is how much he liked it! My mom’s shoarma burger was amazing as well, especially the fresh garlic & spicy VJFB sauce completed the burger.

I mean, look how excited I am haha, this is definitely the best place to spend your (cheat)day and indulge in the most amazing burgers.

I don’t think I can eat veggie burgers anywhere else anymore, because it just won’t be as good as this! The Vegan Junkfood Bar does desserts as well, my mom had ice cream and my brother went for a red velvet cake while I had the fresh coconut.

That the place is always busy and popular is clear. They are opening a third location now and besides the restaurant I visited they also have a burger bar in Amsterdam. I can only hope that they will open more locations in the Netherlands and who knows, maybe in England soon as well!

Long story short, The Vegan Junkfood Bar is the perfect place to spend your cheatday and enjoy comfort food that is cruelty free and tastes absolutely incredible! I can’t wait to be back and drag all my other friends and family members to this place!
